Ever so frequently in newspapers and general media there are repeated stories of vandalism, rape and murder. We read of truancy of the young from school or being expelled because of behaviour problems. Additionally children are being forced medicated with anti-psychotics because of wild and exuberant behaviour often termed attention deficit disorder, and/or associated with hyperactivity.
From the outside this parlous state of affairs is disruptive of society and disconcerting to say the least. Such miscreant behaviour most often results in legal processes being brought to bear on families and often a great amount of grief, if not shame for the family involved.
But what of the person – what does the individual feel in all this? Sometimes one can look at a child as see the ‘devil’ in them, but this is only the expression of inner turmoil the young is experiencing. Reprimands in various forms, harsh punishments or punitive measures, threats and other ways will only make the matter worse. It alienates and drives the problem deeper into the soul.
Nutrition as a causal factor
The treatment is simple. Why? Because everyone is inherently good and all one has to do is to appeal to the goodness in the person. For this to work the body must be properly nourished. Time and again it has been shown that nutritional deficiencies give rise to unsociable behaviour. “Nutrition as a causal factor in antisocial behaviour is so simple it’s been overlooked,” states a report in the British Journal of Psychiatry. [‘Fighting Crime with Nutrition,’ March 2003]
Experiments have been conducted in the confines of prison and have shown that the supplementation to the diet of basic vitamin and mineral supplements have changed the mental and emotional outlook and hence behaviour of the inmates.
Another key ingredient is often overlooked in its ability to heal our diseases of body and mind. This food constituent has improved the academic ability of children and calmed those who have been classed as hyperactive and disruptive. It is possible to change children’s and adult’s behaviour for the good by the addition of this substance in the diet. It also heals the body of those all too numerous diseases which fill hospitals.
The substance is now known to the world as Omega 3 essential fatty acid – particularly flax seeds and flax seed oil. It all started with one Dr Johanna Budwig [1908 – 2003]. It was she who developed the method of detecting fats in the blood and so from her work all the knowledge of fats and their role in the body has been established.
Essential fatty acids (EFA) is the necessary vehicle of delivering oxygen into the body’s cells. This gives us vitality and energy. Diseases arise in the body when there is insufficiency of oxygen. Additionally the brain needs more oxygen than any other organ in the body. Studies have linked low levels of omega-3 essential fatty acids to higher rates of depression, bipolar disorder and suicide.

Flax Oil as true aid against Arthritis, Heart Infarction, Cancer and other diseases states the following: “A lack of highly unsaturated fats is particularly noticeable in connection with brain and nerve functioning… In general I recommend the whole family adjust their food intake so that they use optimal, natural fats….As for children whose scholastic performance is often below standard – and it is usually in families where the parents don’t eat correctly – the results of optimal fat intake show themselves in school marks being bettered by not only one, but two levels.”
“….Children are reaching physical maturity ever earlier and this is beginning to give rise to anxiety. Criminality and other social problems have been connected to this factor…. Emotional and rebellious behaviour is treatable without the need for the restraint of law or confined discipline. As an example, I came across an author who noted that kleptomania (the desire to steal) is really a disease and treatable with homoeopathy! There are no less than 15 remedies which address this disease, he stated.

Back in the days of Hippocrates (circa 300 BC) when the assertion was recorded “let food be your medicine and medicine your food” he was not thinking in terms of what would happen to food two thousand years later. Be assured he would be horrified; the shock would probably be the premature end of him!
The Times newspaper in London (April 9, 2008) reported in a story the case of 400 children from the breakaway fundamentalist Mormon Church in Texas, America, who had not been exposed to ‘the outside world.’ This article is not to do with the morality or other issues of the story. It is to do with the children brought up in a traditional environment and the consequences of meeting as it is called ‘the outside world’. One of the volunteer carers of the children said: “They know nothing of the outside world. The children and their mothers did not know what to do with crayons. Our food makes them sick, because they are not used to processed food.”
And herein lays the truth of many a child and adult’s ills: processed food. Processed food is poisonous to a healthy organism; that is why healthy children and adults naturally shun packaged and processed foods, preferring to eat whole and natural foods freshly prepared. Processed foods with the additives of taste enhancers, colourings and preservatives, the sugar to sweeten, and more, are poisonous to the body – but a little bit at a time the body becomes used to the toxins.
In selecting foods we have moved far away from the natural order of living. We have lost the ability to use our senses and inner instincts for selecting food that supports and enhances the living beings that we are. Regrettably, processed foods have become the norm for most Western people. Therefore, in re-establishing a proper dietary pattern which support the dynamics of the unfolding human being for infant to creative adult, there are basic questions to ask – is it natural or unnatural? Is the food alive or is it dead? And is it suitable for the infant or child?
Additionally, one must ask the question, despite all the modern contrivances and conveniences: what did my grandmother and her mother before her, feed her children and her family? This then removes many of the doubts and baffling science from the selection processes. Grand- and great-grand parents lived well, and healthily, before the advent of food processing.
To return to health and well-being, the path can be long and arduous, but it must always start with diet – simple, whole and natural foods. This is the remedy, first and foremost.
Now the real question is how to have this all come about?? Is it possible to redeem or rebuild what has been lost when it comes to food and taste and so build health and wholeness?

‘And you shall eat of the grasses and the herbs….’
How simple it is to talk of a whole foods diet and the benefits derived these things; how simple are the principles once whole and natural foods when one has incorporated the vitality of whole foods into one’s life. How plain it is to see the detrimental effects of re-fined, de-natured foods on the body, yet how complex is it that many more do not grasp these same facts. Is it a want for more information?
Is it the want for doctors, for example, to become more knowledgeable on the energetics of food and the virtues of whole foods, rather than prescribing antibiotics so very liberally? Is it for the want for education of parents on the requirements of food for babies and growing children to place simple whole foods on their plates and not give in the demand for processed food and sugared drinks? Is it that each needs to be taught, to have logical explanations placed before them, to see these facts, but no one has the time this takes to counsel?
Or that there is no one solution, no single truth?
The fact remains that to any observant reader of the media, journals and books, that the world is seemingly contradictory. There is nothing definitive. There shall always be contradictions. Understand some ‘truth’ by your own experience and with time this is also contradicted. Truth is relative! Truth Is!
In a 1920 publication on the spiritual properties of food, the author introduces the subject by expressing the then current belief that eating raw and whole foods was considered to make men animalistic, and that the eating of refined foods was in itself to enhance refinement in people. If we look back upon this last century, we can indeed see the shifting attitudes in all spheres of human endeavour, both positively and negatively. Everything resolved.
Marriage and virtue, were once sacred, now a malediction. Magnanimity has made way for self-assertiveness, often violent, and no thought of consequence. Our senses have become dulled, our tastes sullied. Refinement has become debauchery. The valiant attempts to re-introduce the concept of wholeness, is met with an increasingly number of blank faces, not comprehending the meaning. Yet desperation exists in people for the want to know, to be taken on a path of wholeness once the seed is planted, or a conversation is overheard.
Health is declining in all spheres of earthly existence. The everyman eating what there is, without thought to the subtlety of changing culture and values, without thought to the value of what he ingests. Perhaps this is only for the privileged; for those whose social position gives them choice, the time to read and dwell on such matters. Others have had their roots cut off. Tradition and innate knowledge put asunder. Ignorance was never a virtue.
National cuisine has altered dramatically everywhere. What people think is traditional is rooted in modern food refinement, meaning that tradition is only of this century and at most two hundred years old. The human condition and the requirement of the time in the quest for evolvement have altered. In this way, what the ancient Western, Chinese or Indians saw as the working of the human expression has changed. Hence the need to review in the light of the modern experience, the ancient texts, such as the Yellow Emperors Book of Internal Medicine, a surviving document of the ancient Chinese concepts of the body human and the expression of the Tao as embodied in the I Ching. Things do change. Modern medical discoveries cannot be ignored in the essence of it’s understanding, but by the same token neither made into a dogmatic principle: that antibiotics cures all and that headaches are an aspirin deficiency syndrome. The body is more than the material with which research scientists are working to discover it’s most intricate workings and labelling the secret workings with letters, numbers, delivering the whole body in a mathematical and chemical formula.
This approach will ultimately never bring forth the answers to the diseases that face humanity or ultimately give the body human the perfect diet, the perfect lifestyle. Inwardly every person knows that life is more than this. The seers of past ages did not distinguish the body as a physical reality but as an expression of the greater reality, of an occurrence which could only be explained in myths and mysteries of the Greeks, Egyptians, or of the Chinese and Indian.
The dryness and barrenness of modern Western Science needs to be bridged for no amount of genetic engineering, anti-viral solutions will solve the physical and mental dilemma of our age.
Food is colour, shape, and form. It speaks to us if we were only to listen to it. The healing qualities of food cannot be potentised if we do not respect that life resides in every grain and every leaf and root. Many a person has brought him or herself back to life from being pronounced terminally ill, by eating simple foods. Yet there is something at play which only the individual can discover. Being faced with imminent death, the will to live and to take another path kindles life and brings the healing forces into play. The weariness of living can only be offset by the wholesome desire to live. The desire for undemanding solutions such as a pill, or a cup of herbal tea, will never solve the mystery of disease, of human misery, of dull and empty thinking.
All your bodily needs are available from whole foods. The end point of nutritional research and sought after ‘fabulous’ cures for your disease and vitality, will prove to be the eating of whole foods, preferably organically grown in fertile, unpolluted soils. The message is simple, yet simplicity is the hardest thing to recognise – food is a living thing.
